The NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts. Area schools including Dickinson State University, Dickinson High School and Trinity High School will be a part of the community-wide event. The Dickinson Public Library and Dickinson State University will coordinate efforts to host the activities associated with The Big Read. The novel selected for The Big Read is The ThingsThey Carried by Tim O’Brien. Author Tim O’Brien will make several appearances in Dickinson including an author visit at Dickinson High School. Trinity students have been invited to attend the presentation in October. Trinity’s English Department met to discuss the use of this text for the juniors and seniors. The Things TheyCarried is a collection of short stories describing the experiences of a platoon of American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam war. It is realistic and has been noted for its honest portrayal of a soldier’s emotions. In an interview with O’Brien on NPR, the book is described as “a staple of college and high school English classes, celebrated as one of the most important works about the experiences of war.” In reading reviews of the book, it is clear O’Brien explores complex emotions, emotions that surface not only in war but also in the day- to- day lives of all. The novel invites discussion about the way in which we cope in difficult circumstances and how we handle such emotions as fear and grief. Because of the harsh realities of war, the novel includes some disturbing imagery and profanity. In the event a parent asks that their child not participate in The Big Read, another war-related novel from our library will be provided. Click here for the OPT OUT form.
